Marvel Studios has been on a roll recently with the box office successes of ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, ‘X-Men: First Class’, and most recently ‘Captain America’. Now, with ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Avengers’ due in 2012, Marvel has proven time and again that the company’s flagship characters are box office gold.

The company has tried in the past to make its second tier characters into movie stars. ‘Daredevil’, ‘Elektra’, ‘Ghost Rider’ and ‘Punisher’ have all tried to make the jump from the four-color page onto the big screen with little success.

The latest Marvel star attempting to make movie magic is somebody who might have the spirits on his side… Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme! Twitch reported today that writers Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (‘Sahara’, ‘Conan the Barbarian’) just turned in their first draft of a ‘Doctor Strange’ film script.

Comic creator legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first published ‘Doctor Strange’ in 1963. ‘Doctor Strange’ is the tale of the great surgeon Stephen Strange who loses his ability to operate when his hands are damaged in a tragic car accident. Refusing to surrender to his fate and quickly losing his faith in medicine, Strange turns to magical arts to heal his wounds and eventually gains the title of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.

This isn’t the only Marvel b-lister being prepped for the big screen in the wake of ‘The Avengers’. Nicholas Cage (‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’) premiered new ‘Ghost Rider’ footage at San Diego Comic-Con, director Edgar Wright (‘Shaun of the Dead’) has been working on ‘Ant-Man’ for a while, and there is the long rumored ‘Luke Cage’ film also in the works.

What do you think? Can ‘Doctor Strange’ break the curse of Marvel’s b-list movie flops? Which actor should play the good Doctor? If his film succeeds, what other Marvel characters would you like to see on film?
