“Everything’s different” in Peter Parker’s life after the events of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and that includes one antagonist that no one saw coming. It was a surprise that came way out of left field to have a new character introduced in the mid-credit scene from the second installment of the “Spider-Man” trilogy. Not only was it a perfect inclusion for the character but also for the twist that really will remind comic fans of the infamous “Parker Luck” that our hero constantly suffers from.
There are, of course, spoilers below.
The inclusion of J. Jonah Jameson was the absolute perfect way to play off that final scene which ruins Peter Parker’s life going forward. Not only that, but having J.K. Simmons reprise the role with a slightly different look and more in line with where he was in recent years in the comics was a fun update as well.
As to how it all came about, there was a little back and forth between the two writers on how the idea and casting came to be:
McKenna: Both of those ideas came together pretty quickly. I don’t know if it was [director Jon] Watts or someone else who said, “It should be the Daily Bugle, and it should be J. Jonah Jameson.” That idea has been lingering around since “Homecoming”: How do we insert our new version of J. Jonah?
Sommers: There had already been some interest in possibly using J.K. Simmons when we brought J. Jonah back, so once it was decided that we were going to reveal Peter’s identity at the very end instead of the final battle, it all fell into place very naturally that J. Jonah would be involved.
McKenna: Something that had been floating through this entire movie was the idea of “fake news” and how can you believe everything you see? We had been toying with the idea that Mysterio would turn Spider-Man into a villain, just like he did in the comic books, and it felt like that then tied into this J. Jonah 2.0 as the Alex Jones of the MCU.
I’m thrilled that they not only brought Simmons back but gave him a twist as well. It also can’t help but make you wonder if the multiverse idea which Jon Watts has been kicking around could be accurate. With an entire Spider-Verse out there who is to say that it isn’t indirectly part of the MCU or that Sam Raimi’s movies aren’t connected as well?
