the passage

Mark-Paul Gosselaar can’t catch a break.  His newest series, ‘The Passage’ has been canceled by FOX, the same network that served as home to his previous series, the baseball drama ‘Pitch’, which was also canceled after just one season.  Before that, his NBC sitcom ‘Truth Be Told’ also only lasted for one season.

‘The Passage’ was created by Liz Heldens (‘Friday Night Lights’) and depicted the discovery of a new virus that could be used to cure all illnesses or wipe out humanity.  However, this “cure” begins to transform test subjects into vampire-like beings.  The series was based on Justin Cronin’s best-selling book trilogy and was originally developed by Fox to be a movie, with first Ridley Scott, then Matt Reeves attached to direct.  Scott served as a producer of the TV series.  The first (and only) season consisted of 10 episodes.  It premiered with 5.2 million viewers, but ratings dropped steadily over the following weeks, with the season finale logging the lowest ratings of the season.

Gosslaar starred as the lead, Brad Wolgast, an agent of Project NOAH whose allegiance changes after he is tasked with capturing the Project’s next test subject, a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte (played by Saniyya Sidney).  The cast also included Jamie McShane, Caroline Chikezie, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Brianne Howey, McKinley Belcher III, Henry Ian Cusick, and Vincent Piazza.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, ‘The Passage’ ended on something of a cliffhanger after Brad was bitten by one of the infected.  Amy saved him by injecting him with the last cure but left before he regained consciousness.  The last scene jumped forward many years and depicted Amy as a veteran vampire hunter but still separated from Brad.

Both Gosselaar and Sidney took to Instagram to break the news of ‘The Passage’s cancellation.

In life, some news isn’t easy to hear. But it’s always important to end each chapter on the highest note. It’s the best way to begin the new. So in saying good bye to “The Passage,” I wish to thank FOX & Scott Free Productions for your steadfast support of me the second I walked through the door. To our wonderful creator Liz Heldens for watching over me & entrusting me in this incredible role. Our dynamic directors Jason Ensler & Marcos Siega for giving me room to play.
