Timothy Zahn Mara Jade Star Wars

Rumors have been swirling that the “Mara” which is slated to appear in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘ is going to be Luke Skywalker‘s wife Mara Jade but Timothy Zahn isn’t sold. As the creator of the character, he would have some insight as to if she were being used or not.

Timothy Zahn created the character in the Expanded Universe of novels for “Star Wars” before Disney bought the company and rebranded the EU into “Legends.” When the company moved forward just to make the six live-action films and ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’  they wrote off as canon everything which had been published at that point, including Zahn’s epic trilogy of novels and extended work.

Mara Jade was introduced as a woman who Luke Skywalker would fall in love with and eventually marry. However, Zahn doesn’t think she’ll be making an appearance in the upcoming film. According to the author:

“If there was a generic, or organic, spot for her to fit into a story…I promise people, I will pitch it to the Lucasfilm story group, and then, it’s their decision whether to allow it or not.”

The fact of the matter is, he does have a say in how his characters are used and haven’t signed off on anything at this point. At least, he isn’t publically stating that he has. That being said, this wouldn’t be the first of his creations to cross back into canon. Grand Admiral Thrawn was brought back into continuity when he was introduced in ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and seen again in recent ‘Star Wars’ comics and novels.

Do you think that J.J. Abrams may have not yet informed Timothy Zahn that Mara Jade will be in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’? Assuming she isn’t making an appearance, do you think that they can still somehow end up making the character canon? Share your thoughts below!
