justice league

It’s official– ‘Justice League’ had the weakest box office performance of the current DC Extended Universe series.  Now that it has completed its entire theatrical run, the team-up flick clocks in at $657,924,295 internationally and $229,024,295 domestically.  Warner Brothers has struggled to get its DC film universe up and running from the start.  Zack Snyder‘s ‘Man of Steel’ kicked things off, but only made $668,045,518 internationally.  But even so, that’s still $100M more than ‘Justice League’.

Here are the numbers.  First worldwide:

  1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $873,634,919
  2. Wonder Woman – $821,847,012
  3. Suicide Squad – $746,846,894
  4. Man of Steel – $668,045,518
  5. Justice League – $547,924,295

Then domestic:

  1. Wonder Woman – $412,563,408
  2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice-$330,360,194
  3. Suicide Squad – $325,100,054
  4. Man of Steel – $291,045,518
  5. Justice League – $229,024,295

As you can see, in the U.S., ‘Wonder Woman’ ruled, but globally, ‘Batman V Superman’ comes out on top.  Unfortunately, ‘BvS’ was poorly received by audiences and with its massive budget, this figure is still a disappointment.

Warner Brothers has been steadily scrambling to fix things behind the scenes, moving producers around and reportedly firing Zack Snyder, who was the mastermind behind the first two films in this series.  But the damage may already be done.  The lack of enthusiasm for ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman V Superman’ and now ‘Justice League’ seems to indicate that audiences just aren’t into the DC films, except for ‘Wonder Woman’.

And it’s not that ‘Justice League’ was bad.  Most people at least found it “fun.”  It was shorter and lighter than previous installments.  It seems that WB, Snyder and Joss Whedon intentionally delivered something that audiences claimed they wanted.

Can anything change the public’s minds regarding the DC movies?  Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was a highlight of ‘Justice League’, but since not many people saw it, will there be a built-in audience when his solo movie arrives later this year?  And while I personally think Zachary Levi looks great in the ‘Shazam!’ leaked set photos, I’ve seen plenty of others online who are trashing his costume.  And ‘Shazam!’ is a concept that has had trouble even sustaining an ongoing comic book.  Are there enough fans out there to make this film a success?  And then there’s ‘Flashpoint’ to be directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The ‘Flashpoint’ comic book dealt with time travel and resetting reality.  Many are speculating that WB will use the film to reboot their movie universe.

What did you think of ‘Justice League’?  Are you surprised that it did so poorly?
