Before Peter Parker swung into action alongside Team Iron Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ ahead of his own adventure in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, Sony Pictures had their own master plan for Spider-Man and his amazing friends outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an effort to expand their Spider-verse, the studio was working on an animated Spidey film, a solo movie for Venom, another spinoff featuring a female lead, and more. Well, despite Marvel Studios gaining creative control of Spidey, it appears that those other projects are still in development. Earlier this year, producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach enlisted ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ writer Dante Harper to develop a script for Venom. Then Sony announced just last week that Bob Persichetti is being brought on to direct the animated Spider-Man feature from Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Now, there may be some new moves being made in regards to that female-led film.

On the latest episode of ‘Meet The Movie Press’, host Jeff Sneider shared that his sources say that Sony is working on a movie starring Silver Sable, an anti-hero/mercenary closely associated with Spider-Man as both a friend and a foe. Not only that, but the studio is apparently in talks with ‘Shame’ and ‘The Invisible Woman’ screenwriter Abi Morgan to pen the script. And furthermore, the hosts speculate that Eli Roth could be directing since he was rumored to have been talking with a studio about a superhero property that they didn’t know that they had. With Silver Sablinova being a relatively small character within Spider-Man mythology, she certainly fits that bill.

Silver Sable Spider-ManFor those unfamiliar with the character, Silver Sable was created in 1985 by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. She has no superhuman abilities, but she is skilled in various forms of combat and generally uses the latest technology in conjunction with a saber, chai, and pistols. And in addition to being the CEO of Silver Sable International (who supplies her with her high-tech weaponry), she leads a group of mercenaries called the Wild Pack, who she utilizes while hunting down war criminals.

It will be interesting to see how far this project goes. Silver Sable sounds like a perfect candidate for the next big female spy franchise. It also fits into Roth’s wheelhouse as it almost sounds like ‘Inglorious Bastards’ led by a woman. But with The Punisher and Black Widow already in play in the MCU, Marvel (who currently has creative control over Spidey) may feel hesitant about bringing in a character that is almost a mash-up of the two. Or even better, they could all team up and hunt bad guys together! Of course, it all depends on how the story is presented. After all, there are a couple of super soldiers, multiple Asgardians, and so many mechanical super suits out there in this universe already. There’s always room for more badass women. However, this should all be taken with a grain of salt for now as nothing official has even been announced.

What do you think about Sony Pictures developing a Silver Sable movie? Do you think that she will be a good fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or do you think that the studio should focus on a different heroine from Spider-Man canon to be the focus of a feature film? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
