When it comes to ‘Ghostbusters’ these days, most of the talk is about the elusive third film that has been in the works for years now. Things looked rocky after Harold Ramis’ untimely passing, then even worse when Ivan Reitman (and Phil Lord and Chris Miller) vacated the director’s chair for the project. But just last week, ‘Zombieland’ director Ruben Fleischer was announced as the possible replacement director after briefly being rumored for the ‘Ant-Man’ job, which ultimately went to Peyton Reed. Though while things continue to shuffle around for the third film, focus will be shifted back to the one that started it all at the end of the summer.
Entertainment Weekly recently shared that you will be able to call Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore once again when a restored and remastered version of ‘Ghostbusters’ heads back to over 700 movie theaters in North America for a limited theatrical re-release on August 29, 2014 as the centerpiece of film’s 30th anniversary. Special events, collectible merchandise, and a new home-entertainment release will also commemorate the occasion that saw these paranormal exterminators dominate the box office during the summer of 1984.
In addition to the ‘Ghostbusters’ 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray, a special 25th anniversary edition of ‘Ghostbusters II’ will be released on September 16, 2014. It will be the first time that the sequel will be available on Blu-Ray and both films will be accompanied by new special features such as previously unreleased deleted scenes and interviews with Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd. Plus, a special collector’s edition featuring both films and an exclusive Slimer figure will also be available. Sony’s president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer shared his thoughts about the new ways you can enjoy this fan favorite franchise:
“’Ghostbusters’ is still one of our studio’s most beloved franchises. I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it’s a real thrill for me to see that it’s still connecting with audiences everywhere. On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again.”
Personally, I’m a big fan of when my favorite movies return to the big screen for special engagements, so I’ll definitely be trying to snag a pair of tickets for ‘Ghostbusters’ when it returns to theaters in August.
