David Harbour as Hopper in Stranger Things 4

With production of Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things 4‘ getting closer to happening, one might think David Harbour would know if Sheriff Hopper is set to return. However, while at the German Comic Con Dortmund, the actor is claiming to still not know if he’ll be back stating, “Oh my Lord! I don’t know. Should we call the Duffer brothers?”

This could easily be a case of the actor trying to keep what is to come a secret from audiences if he knows the truth about a potential return. At this point, every actor knows that part of the mystique of the show is not knowing what will happen.

Even so, Harbour is claiming that “We don’t know yet, we don’t know. They won’t tell me anything, so we’ll have to see. I think you’ll find out at some point; we’ll find out at some point. Let’s hope he’s alive.” The audience cheered when he asked if they hoped Hopper was still alive and went on to share, “Guess what? Me too. Because I like working.”

After the dismal release of ‘Hellboy,’ it should be no surprise that Harbour wants to stay involved in Netflix’s smash hit series. However, the actor also felt that his character “needed to die.” If that doesn’t make sense, he breaks it down for fans:

“I think Hopper — from the very beginning I’ve said this — he’s very lovable in a certain way, but also, he’s kind of a rough guy. Certainly in the beginning of Season 1, he’s kind of dark, and he’s drinking, and he’s trying to kill himself, and he hates himself for what happened to his daughter. I feel like, in a sense, that character needed to die. He needed to make some sacrifice to make up for the way he’s been living for the past like 10 years, the resentments that he’s had. So he needed to die.”

A return from the grave, or if he is “The American” in Russia could lead to an “interesting” change for the character:

“Now whether or not there is this second act, whether or not there is some sort of resurrection, whether or not we can see him go off in a certain way, would be really interesting to me. I would love it. Anybody watch Lord of the Rings? Gandalf the Grey fights the Balrog, descends into darkness, battles him forever, and everyone thinks he’s dead. And then he re-emerges as Gandalf the White, with sort of a new strength and a new power. That would be an interesting arc for him.”

I’m not expecting that we’ll see Hopper have magical powers, but his return might be just what is needed for Eleven’s abilities to get jumpstarted in their time of need.
