Colin Trevorrow Discusses Original Cast Returning for 'Jurassic World III'

While the end of the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy was already generating a lot of excitement, the news that the original trio of main cast members from the first movie are returning for this installment has made ‘Jurassic World III’ a truly exciting release for fans of the franchise. And with Colin Trevorrow sitting down with Empire recently to talk about the movie, fans were treated to a lot more information about the upcoming blockbuster, especially in regards to the returning stars.

With Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler back in thick of things, Trevorrow makes it clear that the movie will offer many connections to the original ‘Jurassic Park,’ as well as let us know what has been going on with these characters since we last saw them on screen (for Grant and Sattler, that would be way back in ‘Jurassic Park 3.’ For Malcolm, it would be in ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ film where he advocated destroying the remaining dinosaurs).

In the words of Trevorrow:

“You start asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they’re living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history? Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We’ll do it together.”

He also brings up the work that is going into finding a way to bring back the original three in a way that feels like they belong in the story, and are not just there for fan service:

“The next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. Emily Carmichael and I call it ‘Jurassic Park VI’, because it is.”

When talking about the original characters were not part of ‘Jurassic World’ before, he points out, correctly so that:

“…We’d have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again.”

Which would seem pretty ludicrous, even for a franchise about bringing dinosaurs back to life using ancient DNA pulled from tree sap (feels more like the set-up for a horror sequel to have them go through the same ordeal all over again). How exactly they plan to use the characters in ‘Jurassic World III,’ now that the dinosaurs have been unleashed on the mainland US, and how they will interact with the new stars of the franchise, namely Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing, we’ll have to wait to see, but it is exciting to know all of these stars will be on-screen together. And if this is indeed the end of the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, it seems a very fitting way to end this chapter. Even though I HIGHLY doubt this will be the last we see of this particular franchise, as Hollywood just seems unable to let any franchise die nowadays.

What are your thoughts on bringing back Malcolm, Sattler, and Grant for ‘Jurassic World III?’ Do you think Trevorrow and company will be able to do the characters justice? Feel free to share your opinions and any ideas you may have in the comments below!
