With the recent success of review IT: Chapter Two‘ and the upcoming releases of season two of ‘Castle Rock‘ and the long-anticipated ‘The Shining’ sequel ‘Doctor Sleep‘, things seem to be on track for Stephen King as of lately. The world-renown master of horror’s successful streak is continuing into next year with the HBO limited series ‘The Outsider’.
The trailer begins with Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) coaching a little league game when two officers arrest him for the murder of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson. Bewildered, Maitland is adamant that he is innocent of the crime. Detective Ralph Anderson (Mendelsohn), whose son was coached by Maitland is inclined to believe, partially due to the evidence being confusing. This where things get eerie – fingerprints place Maitland at the scene of the murder, but video surveillance footage shows Maitland was 60 miles away at the time the boy was killed. This leads to the question: “How could Maitland be in two places at once?” Cue the spine-chilling music.

In a voice-over, Anderson declares, “I have no tolerance for the unexplainable.” As a series of increasingly grisly images quickly flash across the screen, it is suggested that the detective is going to have to delve deeper in order to solve the case. Psychic investigator Holly Gibney, played by Cynthia Erivo, responds, “Well then, sir, you’ll have no tolerance for me.”The ensemble cast includes Paddy Considine, Mare Winningham, Bill Camp, and Julianne Nicholson.
Richard Price, the creator, producer, and writer of HBO’s critically-acclaimed crime drama ‘The Night Of’ will be adapting the 10-episode series from King’s novel of the same name. Price also served as a writer on HBO’s well-known crime drama ‘The Wire’. The series’ official trailer, which can be seen below, was recently released and it features an impressive cast led by Jason Bateman and Ben Mendelsohn.
Fans of both Price’s and King’s work should be excited to hear that in less than 3 monthes they will be able to tune in when ‘The Outsider’ premieres on January 12.
