We’re getting an entirely new origin story to the Clown Prince of Crime in Warner Bros’ upcoming ‘Joker’ film, and now the studio is releasing an extended explanation of what to expect. This isn’t a replacement for the synopsis but came as a plot description from the production notes of the film after it debuted to an eight-minute standing ovation at this year’s Venice International Film Festival.
The new description centers entirely around Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the character and how we’ll be seeing him lose his way throughout the movie.

According to a Warner Bros press release for the film, here is the new ‘Joker’ synopsis:
Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him.
Even with this new description, I have to say that while I think this does look like a fun psychological thriller, I’m not sold on it being a good ‘Joker’ film. Of course, I often feel that ‘Man of Steel’ is a fun alien invasion movie but not a good ‘Superman’ movie, so that puts me at odds with many DC fans.

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
