Michael Rooker seems to have shot down rumors that he was in talks to portray King Shark in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’. He wrote a simple response to a post on Instagram, which reported this news.
Lending credence to the rumor is the fact that Rooker is a frequent collaborator with Gunn, most famously portraying Yondu in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, and starred in ‘The Belko Experiment’ and ‘Brightburn’, which were produced by Gunn.
Instead, Rooker is currently shooting Paramount Players’ ‘Monster Problems‘, directed by Michael Matthews, in Australia. That picture co-stars Ariana Greenblatt, Jessica Henwick, Dylan O’Brien, and Dan Ewing. Rooker was also recently seen in ‘True Detective’ Season 3, and will next be seen on the big screen in Blumhouse’s ‘Fantasy Island’, directed by Jeff Wadlow. That picture is set to open in February 2020. After ‘Monster Problems’, Rooker is set to star in John McNaughton’s ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’.

Another ‘The Suicide Squad’ casting rumor that has surfaced is that Benicio Del Toro, who also co-starred in Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, was being eyed to play the film’s villain, simply known as “The Mayor.” But considering that Rooker’s talks turned out to be false, that one isn’t looking very likely.
‘The Suicide Squad’ is expected to begin filming this fall. The cast is said to include Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, David Dastmalchian as the Polka-Dot Man, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Idris Elba in a currently unknown role, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The one character that is rumored to be part of the script but that is uncast is King Shark, but most likely this part will be performed by a motion capture performer, with a celebrity voice brought in during post-production, so it’s possible that there won’t be any casting news for quite some time. (Also, since this character is Hawaiian, the actor will most likely not be Caucasian, at least if Warner Brothers wants to avoid a whitewashing controversy.)
