Casting news for ‘Dune‘ has been coming out strong and one actress is now being courted for one of the leading roles in the film. Zendaya has been the romantic lead for both Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and Zac Efron in ‘The Greatest Showman’ and now might join Denis Villeneuve‘s reboot of ‘Dune.’ This will be a part for the actress which will let her show off how strong she can be as she is up for the part of Chani who is Paul Atreides’ love interest.
A Fremen warrior, Chani is the girl of Paul’s dreams, literally. He has had visions of her for years before meeting her, and the woman is wrapped in his destiny. That being said, the ‘Dune’ film is meant to tell the story of the first novel in two parts and Chani might not even appear in the first movie or if she does, it won’t be in a significant role as her story is told more in the second half of the book.
It sounds as if only a handful of non-white actresses were up to test for the part, though a rep for her wouldn’t comment on if there was further interest on her side.
If Zendaya does land the role, she’ll be joining an already impressive cast, and I think she’d be great for the part. Her ability to sarcastically respond to Holland feels like it could easily be changed to translate into the style of amusement Chani has for Paul.
Joining the cast would allow her to work with the likes of Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Charlotte Rampling. Of course, not all of these characters will be in the same places which Chani is in so it wouldn’t include all of them.
