Netflix has a bit of a Marvel problem. Not due to the content they’ll be losing when Disney+ launches later this year, but rather the content they’ve already lost. The streaming giant’s stunning cancellation of ‘Daredevil’ late last year (coupled with the somewhat less stunning cancellations of ‘Iron Fist’ and ‘Luke Cage’) has inescapably taken the wind out of the remaining shows’ sails.
The latest example of this was the gallows humor surrounding the recent debut of the second season of ‘The Punisher’. But as grim as some fans may find the show’s prospects to be, it’s not over until it’s over. And it’s certainly not all doom and gloom behind the scenes, as we reported just a few days ago that ideas are already being kicked around for a presumptive third season. And now, showrunner Steve Lightfoot has elaborated somewhat on the nature of those ideas in a conversation with the folks at Heroic Hollywood:
“Yeah. All those guys are great. Obviously Daredevil and Punisher have a lot of history and story between them in the comic books. So it would be great to dig into some of that. Also villains like the Kingpin, who was featured in quite a lot of the Punisher books as well. So it would be fantastic to get some of those guys back into the show if we can make it work.”
At this stage, of course, nothing is set in stone (including whether or not there will even be a third season). Nonetheless, the possibilities this puts on the table are tantalizing. After all, these sorts of crossovers are part of what made the Marvel Cinematic Universe a success in the first place (and something that was often missing from the Netflix shows). And frankly, it’s a notion that is only made that much more appealing by the fact that we won’t be seeing a fourth season of ‘Daredevil’ any time soon.
