From Umbrella Academies to Corporations, it seems that Netflix wants to stay out of the rain as they’ve just placed an order for a new series based on Capcom’s ‘Resident Evil‘ franchise. German production and distribution company Constantin Film will be the studio behind the new series though Netflix will release it as a global original. At this time, no showrunner or writing team has been announced for the series.

Plot details have yet to be revealed though rumor has it that “the drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and “easter eggs.””

As the film franchise has come to a close after six movies, it is unlikely that there will be any callback to the events as this appears to be a standalone version that will likely show the start of the zombie apocalypse. However, there are plenty of stories from the video games which have yet to be adapted into live-action that we could see play out or even get a better view as to how the virus spreads across the globe.

There is no indication if this will replace the new film which would reboot the series that Johannes Roberts was tapped to write and potentially direct last month, be released in conjunction with it, or give us two separate takes on the live-action world of ‘Resident Evil.’

Are you excited for a ‘Resident Evil’ series to come to Netflix? Do you hope that this will be released alongside a movie or do you think the reboot should be scrubbed and replaced with this series? Who would you like to see direct or star in an ongoing ‘Resident Evil’ show? Which games do you hope to serve as inspiration for the plot? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
