Parts of ‘Justice League‘ really threw James Wan‘s plans up in the air for ‘Aquaman‘ and it appears that help came from Zack Snyder. The extent of Snyder’s involvement in ‘Aquaman’ wasn’t too widely known and was actually revealed by actor Neil Daly. Daly wasn’t in the film though he was responsible for running the test screenings of both ‘Justice League’ and ‘Aquaman’ for Warner Bros. which was revealed on the Fire and Water Podcast.
The actor commented that Whedon was the one behind the “teenage boy sexual humor” which you could find in ‘Justice League’ such as when Aquaman was hitting on Wonder Woman while wrapped up in the Lasso of Truth. Wan wasn’t a big fan of this take on the character and Daly wanted to clear the air on this:
“We could have gotten a whole movie about Aquaman basically fawning over Mera the whole time and making all kinds of dirty jokes and things like that, and they really had to get away from that, which is all what Whedon had done, so Snyder had a little bit of an influence on Aquaman. James Wan was showing Zack Snyder – against the studio’s wishes – cuts of the movie and early test screenings and storyboards to make sure that they’re on the same page with what he originally wanted and Snyder gave his blessing of approval, bringing it back to what he wanted all along.”
While romance was in the air between Arthur Curry and Mera, this is portrayed quite differently than how Aquaman was shown in ‘Justice League.’ Now, we only have Daly’s word to go on, but this could end up as just one more reason that fans demand a Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’ to surface.
Do you feel that Whedon or Snyder was responsible for how Aquaman ended up being portrayed in ‘Justice League’? Which do you think is a better representation of the hero? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
