Screenwriter Jac Shaeffer seems to have become Marvel Studios’ go-to when it comes to its upcoming female-fronted projects. Schaeffer contributed to the script for ‘Captain Marvel’, out in theaters March 8, the ‘Black Widow’ solo film, which is in pre-production, and now she has been tapped with penning the pilot script for the upcoming Disney+ ‘The Vision and Scarlet Witch’ series. Schaeffer is also moving up the food chain and will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the series. This Disney+ offering will focus on the Avengers’ lovebirds, with Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen reprising their roles from the films.
In addition to her Marvel work, Schaeffer contributed to the screenplay for the upcoming comedy ‘The Hustle’, a retelling of ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ starring Anne Hatheway and Rebel Wilson. She previously wrote the Disney short ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure’.
‘The Vision and Scarlet Witch’ is just one of a number of original Marvel shows coming to Disney’s upcoming subscription service. Also in the pipeline is a ‘Loki’ series starring Tom Hiddleston, and there are rumors that Rocket (Raccoon) and Groot may also get their own show, as well as The Winter Soldier and The Falcon.
Unlike existing TV shows based on Marvel Comics properties, these new projects on Disney+ will originate at Marvel Studios and be overseen by Kevin Feige, so they will be more closely connected to the theatrical films.
They join a slew of new programming that will also include at least two ‘Star Wars’ programs– ‘The Mandalorian’, produced by Jon Favreau; and a series starring Diego Luna as his ‘Rogue One’ character Cassian Andor.
Disney+ is expected to launch this fall, but it’s unclear which shows will be available at launch, although ‘The Mandalorian’ is expected to be among the initial offerings.
What do you hope to see on a ‘Vision and Scarlet Witch’ series? (Other than how The Vision is alive again?)
