Time ran out for the NBC series ‘Timeless’ when it was cancelled because of low ratings in June, but NBC has done the noble thing and rather than leaving the fates of the show’s characters in limbo due to the cliffhanger Season Two finale, they have commissioned a two-hour farewell movie. The movie is expected to air in December and the cast– Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Annie Wersching and Claudia Doumit– gathered to begin work, starting with a table read of the script. Sakina Jaffrey tweeted that she was unable to attend the first table read, but that she would be joining the production over the weekend. Presumably, that goes for Goran Višnjić and Paterson Joseph, who also didn’t appear to be present.
As for the rest of the cast, you can check them out as they goof off for the camera, obviously thrilled to be reunited:
‘Timeless’ was created by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan. NBC actually cancelled it after its first low-rated season, but after an outpouring of support from fans, reversed that decision and brought it back, with an eye on its audience growing. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, so once again NBC dropped the ax, this time for good. Despite an effort by the fans– or rather “Clockwatchers”– to get another outlet to save it, ‘Timeless’ was over for good this time, but luckily NBC had the heart to at least give it a proper conclusion in the form of this movie. Like many other ambitious sci-fi and fantasy shows, the budget for this series was simply too great to justify its less-than-stellar ratings, despite a loyal following.
‘Timeless’ was among a flurry of sci-fi/fantasy cancellations this spring and early summer. SyFy’s ‘The Expanse’ was cancelled, but salvaged by Amazon, while Netflix picked up ‘Lucifer’ after FOX dropped it. Unfortunately, ‘Timeless’ and Freeform’s ‘Shadowhunters’ were unable to find new outlets to help them carry on. Like NBC, Freeform opted to create a farewell movie to wrap up ‘Shadowhunters’.
NBC has yet to schedule an official air date for the ‘Timeless’ finale but check back for updates.
