Gambit

The Fox-owned Marvel x-Men Universe feels like the studio is just throwing things at the wall to see what will stick before the franchise is entirely cancelled. Case in point: ‘Gambit‘ is slated to have a “romantic or sex comedy vibe.” The news came from Simon Kinberg who also quickly stated that it is still “very much a superhero movie.” Marvel Studios has a solid track record of proving that you can have multi-genre superhero movies but it just feels shoehorned in with Fox’s take on the characters likely set to come to a close after the current round, outside of Deadpool that is.

Kinberg has been making the rounds promoting ‘Dark Phoenix’ which he directed and other aspects of Fox’s X-Men franchise have, of course, been brought up. With how Gambit has always been portrayed in the comics, it isn’t a surprise that there would be aspects of a “romantic comedy” found in any story that he is involved in.

As Kinberg shares:

“When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer, and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

It’ll be fun to see the woman that they introduce who will give the character a run for his money. It is actually due to ‘Deadpool’ that they ended up going in this direction as he explains, “Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”

The producer did want to clarify his comments a little though:

“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”
