This ship has sailed. After five seasons, TNT has pulled the plug on sci fi series ‘The Last Ship’ which was executive produced by Michael Bay, Bryan Fuller and more. The series focuses on the crew of the USS Nathan James, who are the one group of people not infected by a global pandemic. The series starred Eric Dane, Adam Baldwin, Rhona Mitre, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Marissa Neitling, Jocko Sims, Kevin Michael Martin, Bridget Regan, Fay Masterson, Emerson Brooks and Jodie Turner-Smith.
In September, Van Winkle accidentally kicked up rumors that the show had been cancelled by posting a message about the “series wrap,” but TNT quickly issued a statement saying:
“We shot two seasons simultaneously; the fourth is currently on the air and the fifth will return next summer. We greenlit the fifth with the idea that it could be the final season, however it’s far too early to make that determination.”
It seems that there was a chance that TNT might pick the show up beyond the fifth season, but most involved with the show expected this to be the end. That may be a relief to loyal fans, as it appears that the creators will be wrapping the series up properly and not ending things on a cliffhanger. ‘The Last Ship’ has been a strong performer for TNT– their third highest rated series behind ‘Major Crimes’ and ‘The Librarians’– but is a remnant from its past regime and it skewed older and the fourth season saw its rating drop by double digits. ‘Major Crimes’ ended in January of this year, after six seasons. TNT announced the cancellation of ‘The Librarians’ in March.
TNT has not yet announced when the fifth and final season will air.
