Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Well, we have another Spider-Man in our midst, and it not at all who I was expecting, and yet, I think I like the casting decision. Of course I’m not talking about the Spidey of Marvel Studio’s MCU, as Tom Holland is clearly gonna hang around for a while (pun INtended), but rather I am talking about Sony’s upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ film, which we already knew was starring Shameik Moore (Miles Morales), Mahershala Ali (Aaron Davis), Brian Tyree Henry (Jefferson Davis) and Liev Schreiber, whose role in the film is not yet known. So who is playing the “adult” Spider-Man in the new film? During Sony’s presentation during Cinemacon recently, it was revealed that they cast ‘New Girl’ actor Jake Johnson in the role of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man for the animated feature.

When you stop and think about it, the casting decision is kind of brilliant for a number of reasons. First off, Jake Johnson is a great comedic actor with a very distinctive voice, all things necessary for anyone playing Spider-Man, who is known to be one of the more humorous and quippy of the superheroes. Throw in the fact that this is adult Peter Parker playing mentor to young Miles Morales, and that they say this Peter has been at the hero game for a long time, and Jake Johnson seems like a good choice for another good reason. He can bring the funny while also having a kind of sad wisdom born of many tragedies, all of which he masks behind the jokes. That seems perfect for an adult Spider-Man, who we all know life tends to step on whenever it gets a chance.

What are your thoughts on the casting of Jake Johnson as Peter Parker in Sony’s new animated ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ film? Do you think he can get the job done? Or were you hoping for someone else? Share your opinions in the comments below!
