When talks about ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ first surfaced it sounded as if we had two movies in the works. However, we’ve learned that at least one key player isn’t interested in returning. With a budget of $165 million and only making $390 million at the global box office, a third outing isn’t likely anyway. At the very least writer and producer Dean Devlin (‘Geostorm,’ ‘The Outpost’) has no plans on working on another installment. We haven’t heard much on the film in the last couple of years or that any of the studios involved were even contemplating bringing the series back to turn it into a trilogy at this point.
While he was recently out hyping his upcoming film ‘Bad Samaritan,’ the producer was asked about any interest in being involved in a third movie which he responded by saying:
“I don’t know. I don’t know. Currently, I personally have no plans on doing another one.”
That sounding like a lack of interest is an understatement!
This isn’t saying that the studio doesn’t want to revisit the franchise which seems unlikely after the proceeds from the second outing, but that Devlin himself isn’t interested in returning. Last we had heard Roland Emmerich had “Intergalactic” plans for a third film so never say never. However, with it already taking 20 years for a second movie to be made and Will Smith not wanting to bring back the role which truly made him into a movie star, it isn’t too surprising that creator interest is waning.
We’re still not sure if passing on this for ‘Suicide Squad’ was the right choice for his career. Hopefully, he at least got a better payday out of it though I think fans would have preferred to see him in this role than being anywhere near the DCEU at this point.
Are you sad that Dean Devlin isn’t going to be pushing for a third ‘Independence Day’ movie or did ‘Resurgence’ drain your interest from the franchise? Share your thoughts below!
