Tomb Raider

When ‘Tomb Raider’ debuted, many fans of the original films may have been hoping for an Angelina Jolie cameo in the movie. That moment never happened. There is a slew of reasons as to why such a cameo could or could have been included and producer Graham King has gone on record as to why they didn’t try to include one.

I would think that most creators would want a reboot should be breaking fresh ground and this is an origin story to start a new franchise so including Jolie would have taken us out of the moment – King has another reason.

According to the producer:

“It was never a story that had that moment where you could, you know what I mean? Pass the baton over. There wasn’t that kind of tone, and that would’ve changed tones to have that… the studios, of course, said ‘is there a way to get Angie? Should we try and have her kind of baton over this kind of thing?’ And I understand it for marketing and studios or whatever, but that never felt organic to our film. Something like that can tip the balance.”

With the style of films being completely different, I’m happy they didn’t decide to go that route. Of course, after how poorly received ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life’ was, it is doubtful that the actress might even have wanted to make an appearance.

While it might have been fun to see Jolie and Alicia Vikander share some screen time, their takes on the character were drastically different. This is one of those cameos which could have been hard to swallow, and I believe it would have taken you out of the moment and, as King says, it wouldn’t have “felt organic to” the movie.

Are you glad they didn’t include Angelina Jolie in the new ‘Tomb Raider’ or would you have welcomed her cameo? Share your thoughts below!
