We’re still three weeks away from the highly anticipated ‘Supernatural’/’Scooby-Doo’ crossover episode, but now comes a first look at the episode, featuring animated versions of Dean (Jensen Ackles), Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) alongside the Mystery Inc. team.
How does this adventure come about? The episode, entitled ‘Scoobynatural’, opens with a live-action Dean wrestling with a plush Tyrannosaurus Rex come-to-life. After the fight, a grateful pawnshop owner offers the boys a TV, which Sam is wary of, but that Dean happily accepts for his “Dean Cave.” However, once back at the bunker, the boys find themselves sucked into an episode of ‘Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?’, specifically 1970’s “A Night of Fright Is No Delight.” Dean recognizes the episode thanks to his extensive knowledge of the cartoon.
Co-showrunner Robert Singer explained:
“Once they get over their amazement at being in the cartoon, two things happen. They say, ’We’ve been in a situation like this before with the Trickster and I think we’re supposed to play this out.’ And then they realize they’re in a Scooby-Doo cartoon, which makes Dean incredibly excited because Scooby-Doo was his favorite cartoon growing up… There are things you wouldn’t see in a regular Scooby-Doo cartoon.”
As singer hints, things quickly turn from Saturday morning fun to something more in keeping with ‘Supernatural’. Don’t expect a man in a rubber mask to be behind these shenanigans. But while there is a reference to the Trixter a.k.a. Gabriel, he isn’t the menace behind this either.
Co-showrunner Andrew Dabb adds:
“This episode was written a year before we had the idea to bring [Gabriel] back. There is a reference to Gabriel [in the Scooby episode], however, given the timeline of this, Gabriel is not the cause of this specific adventure.”
Via Entertainment Weekly, here are a few pictures to tease you for the new episode. One thing you may notice right off the bat is Dean holding Daphne’s hand and hiding with her in the same urn. Coincidence?
Dabb said:
“Dean came of age in a time before the internet when Daphne wasn’t so bad. Dean has very strong opinions on all the Scooby characters, but especially Daphne and Fred.”
‘Scoobynatural’ premiers on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm EST on the CW.
