We all know that actors will likely hype up their upcoming movies but when Oprah Winfrey compared her upcoming ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ you know that we’re going to listen! What is more incredible is that Oprah hadn’t even had a chance to read the book before being cast as Mrs. Which and it was director Ava DuVernay who talked her into joining the cast.
According to Oprah:
“I never read it as a kid, so I just discovered it when Ava started talking about it, but for me, it’s like doing The Wizard of Oz for a new generation. It is a spaced-out Oz, with Meg as the new Dorothy, and I am Glinda! [laughter] Mrs. Which is a combination, for me, of Glinda the Good Witch and Maya Angelou, so I hear both of them in my head as I’m speaking, and I cannot tell you how aligned I think this film is. I do not think of it as a kid’s film. I think of it as a film for generations to come, and will live on in the wisdom empowerment energy field for people in the same way as Oz has.”
While there are some similarities between the two stories, there are enough differences where this shouldn’t feel like a rehash in the slightest. With science fiction elements including “interdimensional travel and the nature of the cosmos,” there is plenty of differences to expect. Not only that, but the film will have a focus on some of the darker aspects of the book and not feel like your standard family-friendly Disney movie.
Do you think Oprah is just hyping ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ or will this be as amazing as the trailers have made it out to be so far? Share your thoughts below!
