If you were hoping that Andy Serkis was strapping on the motion capture suit for Gollum in Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings‘ series, it is time to have your hopes crushed. At this time we’re unaware if the new show will just focus on ‘Lord of the Rings’ or cover every aspect of J. R. R. Tolkien’s work. While Sir Ian McKellen feels that he should be brought back as Gandalf, not everyone has been thrilled about it. John Rhys-Davies has scoffed at the idea and now Serkis politely states he isn’t interested.

During a recent interview about his work in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Black Panther,‘ Serkis was asked about his involvement with the Amazon series.

“Oh gosh, I have no idea what that’s about, really. I mean, it sounds incredible, but I don’t see myself being any part of it. I don’t think they would – I think it’s a completely fresh, new approach to it all, so I don’t think I’d imagine myself to be anywhere near it really.”

To be honest, the best choice is probably to avoid any of the original actors from the films. Amazon will want to make this franchise their own and while telling the overall story of ‘Lord of the Rings’ and possibly connected works such as ‘The Hobbit’ and the ‘Silmarillion,’ it would be best to avoid Peter Jackson’s work.

The films stand on their own quite well, and Amazon needs a draw to keep people coming back for more. While many fans would be open for a long-running narrative of the story, having the same actors involved would almost feel like a re-hash. That, and I’m not sure how happy the studios would be about that.

Are you glad that Andy Serkis doesn’t think he’ll be involved in Amazon’s take on ‘Lord of the Rings’? Do you believe that any of the actors should be included or should they start with a clean slate? Share your thoughts below!
