Henry Cavill’s Superman headlined his own movie with 2013’s ‘Man of Steel’ but his “sequel,” ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ was hijacked by Ben Affleck‘s introduction as Batman and to a lesser degree Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman. Fans would like a proper ‘Man of Steel’ sequel that allows Cavill’s Superman to shine. Plans seemed underway with Matthew Vaughn (the ‘Kingsman’ series) attached to direct, but then ‘Justice League’ came out and was not embraced by audiences, causing Warner Brothers to reassess their plans for further DC Comics movies.
But Cavill will be back in the red and blue next year, according to the latest buzz. His character will return in a movie that is set to begin production soon. It’s just a cameo, but it’s something.
Yes, Cavill’s Superman is expected to make a cameo appearance in David F. Sandberg’s ‘Shazam!’. Allegedly, Asher Angel’s Billy Batson will idolize Superman and that will influence him once he gains the mystical ability to turn into a grown-up superhero, played by Zachary Levi.
Plans are still in place for a proper solo movie and Dwayne Johnson has declared that he wants Cavill to appear in his ‘Black Adam’ movie. So plans are definitely in place for many more appearances of this Man of Steel. Though ‘Justice League’ met lukewarm responses from critics, few found fault with Cavill’s appearance.
It’s currently unclear how big a role Cavill will have in ‘Shazam!’. It could be equivalent to Chris Evans’ cameos in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as Captain America. Or he could show up to help Billy take down bad guy Sivana. We’ll have to wait and see.
‘Shazam!’ directed by David F. Sandberg, stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Cooper Andrews, Jovan Armand, Ian Chen, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Faithe Herman, Ron Cephas Jones, David J. MacNeil and Marta Milans. It will strike theaters on April 5, 2019.
