maddaddam Margaret atwood

Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ has been doing exceptionally well on Hulu will soon be joined another of her works titled ‘MaddAddam.’ This new series is being brought to us by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content and consist of the novels ‘Oryx and Crake’ which was released in 2003, ‘The Year of the Flood’ in 2009, and finally ‘MaddAddam’ in 2013. While the studios have already teamed up to purchase the rights to these novels, no network has been announced at this time.

The book series follows the events of a global pandemic which looks to be bringing about the end of humanity and the small group of survivors who are trying to rebuild with what little remains. The story follows Jimmy who is sick of the world which is run by “all-powerful corporations who rule civilization.” His best friend ends up developing a drug that brings about the pandemic and nearly erases humanity off the map.  We also follow the cult “God’s Gardeners” who are trying to live in the”margins of society,” specifically Zeb (who is a founder of the cult) and two members; Toby and Ren. The novels have been described as “a harrowing, cautionary and inspirational story” which makes for a great story to adapt as a television series.

Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment’s EP Angus Wall says:

“I am very happy with the vision described to me by Angus, Kent, David, Bard and Amy, as well as the stunning visual presentation they put together. I very much look forward to working with them.”

Paramount TV president Powell adds:

“Margaret Atwood’s unique and singular literary voice speaks to the greater issues facing our current climate and resonates with fans worldwide; the MaddAddam trilogy is no exception. These stories are perfectly suited for portrayal on television and we are thrilled to once again bring a literary masterpiece to life with our partners at Anonymous Content, Angus Wall and Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment.”

Finally, Anonymous Content’s Dorros and Kanter stated:

“We’re thrilled to be bringing MaddAddam trilogy to television. The worlds of Oryx & Crake, The Year of the Flood and MaddAddam beautifully illustrate the extraordinary range of Margaret Atwood’s imagination and go deeply afield in time and global evolution presenting fascinating opportunities to dramatize the wildest vision of the future ever shown on television. We’re excited to be embarking on this wonderful journey together with Angus Wall, our friends at Rock Paper Scissors and our partners at Paramount Television.”

At this time no cast or crew have been selected though I suspect a showrunner and writer will soon be announced.
