Don’t be mad! But Kiernan Shipka, best known for playing the troubled Sally Draper for seven seasons on the critically acclaimed AMC drama ‘Mad Men’ has landed the coveted role of Sabrina Spellman on Netflix‘s upcoming ‘Riverdale’ (sort-of) spin-off ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.
Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa stated:
“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Producers have cited ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Exorcist’ as influences. The previously released casting description of the character reads:
Sabrina is an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, struggling
to reconcile her dual natures. She is just beginning her dark education as a
sorceress, even as she tries to maintain some semblance of a normal life as
a sophomore at Baxter High. Sabrina’s intelligent, compassionate, and brave
to the point of recklessness. She challenges witch-doctrine at every turn. She
is fiercely loyal to her family and friends; wickedly funny; and in the middle
of a star-crossed romance with her classmate Harvey Kinkle. Sabrina is all that
stands between us and the Forces of Darkness that threaten our world.
It was just revealed that the “star-crossed romance” between Sabrina and Harvey is because at some point, Harvey discovers that he comes from a long line of witch hunters.
Though she is best known for ‘Mad Men’, Shipka has continued to act and provide voice work for various projects. She recently appeared on Ryan Murphy’s ‘Feud’ and can be seen in the upcoming horror flick ‘The Silence’.
With the first and biggest casting announcement and production expected to begin soon, more news should magically appear soon!
