‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ proved that fans are getting a bit bored with the franchise but the latest preview pic from ‘Bumblebee‘ shows that the studio has another weapon to lure audiences back in – nostalgia! This first shot not only includes Hailee Steinfeld but everyone’s favorite yellow Autobot as well sporting an iconic look that long term fans are going to be thrilled to see.
When talking about what he wants to do with the film, director Travis Knight said that:
“I wanted to approach this massive, expansive franchise and really focus in on a tiny corner of the canvas. Everything I’ve tried to do at Laika, searching for an artful blend of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, humour and heart, I wanted to bring to the Transformers franchise.
At its core it’s just a beautiful love story between two broken souls who find each other and heal each other. I grew up loving those classic Spielbergian Amblin films. And we’re trying to evoke that kind of emotion in this movie, fusing a rich coming-of-age story with some sci-fi insanity.
While I love the idea of an Amblin era film being the thematic guide for ‘Bumblebee’ it really is this image that gets me right in the feels:
Yes. This is Bumblebee. The classic VW Beetle as was portrayed in the cartoon show for years. Not only that, but it sounds like the love story will be between woman and machine. An interesting choice and you have to wonder if they mean romantic love or platonic. Either way, we have Bumblebee back as he should be!
It wouldn’t surprise me if they evolve him into the Camaro look that he is sporting in the 2007 release of ‘Transformers’ by the end of this film. Hopefully right at the end to not take away from our enjoyment of it.
