Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve is currently knee deep in bringing us a new adaptation of ‘Dune,‘ but folding space isn’t the only way he wants to get to a galaxy far far away. That’s right folks, the director of ‘Arrival’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ would like to tackle another science fiction epic as he’d love to take on one of the Non-Saga ‘Star Wars’ movies! His interest in going that route would actually be helping to break the mold of the trilogy films.

While Villeneuve loved ‘A New Hope’ and ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ it isn’t the Saga films that are calling to him:

“It’s something that, again it’s like, I would be intrigued. I don’t know, it’s very difficult. What is dangerous with Star Wars right now is it’s become its own vocabulary. I would love to see them, I think Rogue One was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold.”

That isn’t to say he isn’t all for other trilogies popping up in the ‘Star Wars’ universe as he loves that Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy won’t just focus on the Skywalkers. While he thinks that this portion of the Jedi history has to come to an end to help the franchise, it is new aspects of this universe which he is excited for:

“I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to.”

Sounds like someone Lucasfilm might want to get on the phone. Of course, with “breaking the mold” it could go against the strict guidelines that the studio puts in place. We’ve already seen Colin Trevorrow, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller all removed from films which they were working on for not being in agreement with how Kathleen Kennedy wants the films to be made.

If Villeneuve’s vision didn’t sync up, this wouldn’t exactly be a match made in heaven.

Would you be excited to see Villeneuve tackle a stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ film? What era of the known franchise would you like to see him explore? Share your thoughts below!
