For as much as we know about Shane Black’s ‘The Predator,’ a lot about the film is still shrouded in mystery though Edward James Olmos (‘Battlestar Galactica’,’Blade Runner’) has opened up a bit about the tone of the film and some of the plot. In fact, this legendary genre actor has possibly given us more solid details than we’ve heard to date as to how some of the cast will be interacting as well as a bit of how some of the major characters come together.
The details came out when he was asked about the film during a press junket for ‘Coco.’ While the galaxy’s most skilled hunters might not be the first thing to come to mind during a Pixar movie press gathering, thankfully it came up as we’ve learned the film might have some added humor mixed with the suspense:
“Oh, my goodness. That’s an interesting story. I haven’t seen any of it, but it’s gonna be funny. The kids in the thing. Yeah, the humor. Huge. Huge. I mean I was in shock, because, you know this is a really intense franchise, and it still is. Don’t get me wrong. You’re gonna be inside of it. But the characters are… what he did — Shane is an incredibly gifted writer, and he’s a great director, and so he ended up getting an incredible ensemble, and when I reached it they had already been filming for three months so they were a unit. So I jump in as the General and there were some moments where I just had to laugh in the scene and I couldn’t be laughing in the scene. ‘I’m sorry guys. Really, I’m sorry.'”
Honestly, I truly hope some of those show up in the deleted scenes for the movie. I almost want to see Olmos breaking character and busting out laughing while trying to be serious more than the movie itself now! As the movie plans on using some “shell-shocked” veterans, it sounds like their trying to break a bit of the tension here. Olmos also expands on these soldiers by stating that:
“Because Keegan (Michael Key) and Thomas Jane, they make… they’re paired off in groups of three groups. Six guys. The way they work, they were all post-traumatic stress disorder guys who were inside of an insane asylum. A mental hospital. Then they put the lead character in there to kind of make them disappear, because they want them kind of out of the picture. And so he gets involved and then boom, the world goes crazy and these kids are released. But out of a freaky incident with some of the Predators. It’s crazy. It’s so crazy. I’m excited for it, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I got a good feeling about it. I mean if it’s really funny, and yet deadly like Predator is.”
Shane Black tends to deliver solid films and with this sequel potentially giving us a new entree into ‘The Predator’ franchise which fans can look forward to, I’m starting to get my hopes up. The last few ‘Aliens’ and even ‘Predator’ films haven’t been a huge hit but the premise could still work if delivered correctly.
Are you looking forward to seeing ‘The Predator’ when it is released in August of 2018? Will we finally get an installment into the franchise which we’ve been wanting or will it flounder as the ‘Alien’ sequels have been doing for years? Completely unrelated, who do you think would win in a Predator vs Battlestar Galactica situation and why? Share your thoughts below!
