Tron

It seems the ‘Tron’ franchise has not completely died after all. After the disappointing news came out that the much anticipated ‘Tron 3’ sequel (potentially titled ‘Tron: Ascension’) had been put on ice by the studio, few fans had held onto much hope for the franchise’s return anytime in the near future, especially after ‘Tron: Legacy’ did not fair as well as Disney would have hoped in the box-office or with critics (not to mention the spin-off animation television series failing with kids). But it seems that hope has been kindled once more, this time due to Jared Leto, who apparently loves the ‘Tron’ franchise and would like to work on a new ‘Tron’ movie in the near future.

In Leto’s own words:

“I do think there’s so much potential in that world, there’s so much left to be said. I’m absolutely game to try to help in any way that I can bring that to life. It’s something that we’re in discussions about and very much looking forward to bringing to reality. It’s very early days though.”

Rumor has it that the reboot idea centers around a character named Ares who would have been featured in the ‘Tron 3’ script, with the new script being designed to build a kind of reboot/ spin-off film around Ares and a few elements from that old ‘Tron 3’ script. Sure, it most likely will not feature the main cast from the original, but it will continue the mythology and if successful, could pave the wave toward a true ‘Tron 3’ project and keep the franchise going. Plus, anything with Leto involved nowadays is a good idea, the man is talented, and with the right filmmakers he is capable of great things (of course, the wrong filmmakers could allow him to go a bit wacky *cough*’SuicideSquad*cough*).

What are your thoughts on Jared Leto and a new ‘Tron’ spin-off? Is it time to go back to the grid? Will it be the same without Jeff Bridges? Or do you think they would still find a way to bring The Dude back? Share your thoughts on the matter in the comments below!
