shazam

With all of the recent news recently about Black Adam not making an appearance in ‘Shazam!’ followed by the casting news placing John Cena and Joshua Sasse as the frontrunners for the role of Shazam himself, it is easy to get excited for the next big film coming from the DCEU that does not have a founding member of the Justice League attached, especially since director David F. Sandberg still looks to deliver a film whose tone will be considerably different than the other films set in this universe (i.e. light and humorous). Potentially confirming that tone is an early release of a synopsis for ‘Shazam,’ that if true, should relieve any fans worried than Sandberg and company were going to stray too far from the comic book origins of the hero.

Here’s the synopsis as released by ‘That Hashtag Show:’

“Based on the DC Comics character “Shazam!” Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal when he says the magic word “Shazam! The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: The wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.”

Of course, even with a working synopsis and someone in mind for the role of the titular character, they still need to find a young man capable of playing Billy Batson, who they are describing for those applying for the role as a “male, 12-15 years old. A teenager who becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal. Granted access to incredible powers by the wizard Shazam, he speaks the wizard’s name and is struck by a lightning bolt that gives him the powers of the gods.” Once they have that role locked down, then things will finally seem to be on the right track for ‘Shazam!’

What do you think of this synopsis and all of the news coming out about ‘Shazam!’ so far? Do you think this film has a chance of living up to its possibilities? Or do you still worry about the fact that the DCEU is still somewhat of a quagmire, and only Patty Jenkins has found a way to make a film work within the world so far?
