Could ‘Captain Marvel‘ being set in the 90s be the true start to Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative? We don’t really know. However, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige has shared a bit of why the film is set in the time period. Okay, he really doesn’t give us much to go on but we’ll take what we can get! If nothing else the movies is an excuse to let Samuel L. Jackson have two good eyes. We might even learn what happened to the second one here!
So, why is the movie set in the 90s? According to Feige during a recent interview with MTV:
MTV: “So… time period. When was that hit upon? Was that an early part of the development process, that this would seem like a good idea?”
MTV: “Why?”Feige: “Uh… yes. Yeah. Early, early days.”
Feige: “Uh, well, there is an unexplored period of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we wanted to showcase, and… almost anything else is a spoiler…”
Feige: “…other than to say, the 90s would be a fun period to make a superhero movie in.”
So there is a very important reason but it is a spoiler so we don’t get to find out what it is quite yet. Thankfully Marvel Studios isn’t low on ideas and is just taking Fox’s X-Men idea of setting stories in different time periods. I’m sure there will be a solid reason as to not only why ‘Captain Marvel’ is set in the 90s but why she seems to have been missing since this time.
Assuming at the end of the movie she heads off Earth, it would be easy to explain why she has been gone for 20-plus years and is just showing up in either ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ or another part of Phase 4. Another solid theory is that we’ll be getting one of the various “Secret Wars”-themed stories and that the Skrulls imprisoned her and have been slowly working on invading the Earth for the past 20 years.
Why do you think ‘Captain Marvel’ will have been set in the 90’s? Are we in for a huge Phase 4 setup? Share your thoughts below True Believers!
