While ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen‘ has been coming together there hasn’t been any news on who would be distributing the movie. Now it looks as if looks like Lionsgate will be handling that job.
David Harbour (‘Stranger Things’) is set to star as the Right Hand of Doom with Neil Marshall (‘Dog Soldiers’,’The Descent’) directing. While Lionsgate hasn’t signed on the dotted line at this time they are in “advanced negotiations” for distributing the rebooted franchise and honestly they seem like the perfect fit.
The new adaptation of Mike Mignola’s iconic character is clearly going for a darker version that is more in line with the comics, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. The promo art which came out of Cannes is showing off the kind of artwork which you would have found in the comics which seems to further indicate a stronger tie-in to the source material’s tone.
On the distributing end, Lionsgate also seems like a better fit for an epic horror film, and their marketing team knows how to bring in an audience these days. Likely, they’ll get the word out much easier than Sony did with 2004’s ‘Hellboy’ and Relativity Media was able to do for 2008’s ‘Hellboy: The Golden Army.’ On top of this, they’ll likely help streamline things so that the budget goes much further while reaching potential viewers.
We don’t know too much about the film as of yet outside of its darker take on the material. However, with every other comic launching a cinematic universe, one can only hope that Mignola and Marshall are creating this one to not only work as a great standalone but launch future films with the B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, and the rest of the characters which have been introduced over the years.
