28-General-Zod

When we learned last month that ‘Supergirl’ had cast someone as General Zod and that person was already getting ready to film, many assumed that Zod was going to be the major villain for season 3. He has the presence, he fits the modus operandi of the series (aliens with agendas coming to threaten the earth) and he is a classic Superman villain, but apparently we might have jumped the gun on that one. Recent talks with executive producer Andrew Kreisberg make it seem as though Zod’s role in Season 3 will not actually be as big as we thought, and there might actually be another villain threatening Kara and her allies next year. How did we get to this conclusion? First Kreisberg stated:

“We will get a glimpse of the Season 3 villain in the finale, which we’re also excited about.”

Since word is already out about Zod, it would be very strange for him to talk so cryptically about a character whose involvement in the show has already been announced. He followed that statement up by saying the following during an interview with CBR:

“I don’t really want to say too much about Zod. How and why it happens is a fun surprise. As far as his costume is concerned, we took a page out of the older, Nazi uniform that he used to wear, which was very cool. That name instantly means something to fans of Superman and Supergirl. It’s a bit of a cameo surprise in the episode.”

If his appearance is a cameo, it stands to reason that he cannot be the big bad of the season. Which make sense really, because General Zod really is more of a Superman villain, and ties far more into Superman’s backstory than Kara’s. The really interesting beat here is the fact that Kreisberg is so open about Zod’s appearance, whereas he is being very coy about the Season 3 big bad, and unless he is playing some excellent mind games, it surely means they are not one and the same. But who could Kara be facing in ‘Supergirl’ season 3? Could Lena Luther finally be turning to the dark side? Or have they found another villain worthy of the girl of steel from the annals of DC comics? Only time will tell, but at least we’ll get a glimpse of the villain during the Season 2 finale.
