Marvel Studios has selected the directors for 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’.  Marvel was determined to place a female director behind the lens and at various points had considered Sam Taylor-Johnson (‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, the highest grossing film of all time for a female director), Jennifer Kent (‘The Babadook’), Jennifer Yuh (‘Kung Fu Panda 2’), Niki Caro (who will instead direct Disney’s upcoming live action ‘Mulan’), Lesli Linka Glatter (‘Homeland’), Lorene Scafaria (‘Seeking a Friend For the End of the World’), Lucia Aniello (the upcoming ‘Rough Night’) and Elizabeth Wood (‘White Girl’).  The script for ‘Captain Marvel’ was penned by two women Nicole Perlman (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) and Meg LeFauve (‘Inside Out’).

Carol-Danvers-Captain-MarvelAnd indeed, ‘Captain Marvel’ will be helmed by a woman… and a man.  The directors selected are Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.  The pair directed the award-winning independent films ‘Sugar’ in 2010 and ‘Mississippi Grind’ in 2015 and the nominated film ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ also in 2010.  In television, they have worked on ‘The Big C’, ‘The Affair’ and ‘Billions’.  Though they didn’t direct, the pair penned the script for 2006’s gritty ‘Half Nelson’ which earned Ryan Gossling his first Academy Award nomination.

Of course, Boden and Fleck are now the second directing duo at Marvel, joining Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and the upcoming ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.  Like Boden and Fleck, the Russos started off in television, directing episodes of ‘Animal Practice’, ‘Arrested Development’, ‘Community’ and ‘Happy Endings’.  Now they are attached to produce another upcoming ‘Ghostbusters’ film.

‘Captain Marvel’ will star Brie Larson, who recently won an Academy Award for ‘Room’.  Larson’s Carol Danvers will debut in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘.  It’s not clear what ‘Captain Marvel’ will be about, but it will be an origin story and the character’s origin will be different from that in the comics.

Just yesterday, we learned that Captain Marvel’s costume in the film will strongly resemble that from the comics.

‘Captain Marvel’ directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, starring Brie Larson and (reportedly) Samuel L. Jackson arrives in theaters on March 19, 2018.
