Back in 2012 we saw “writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli” pair the 616-Universe Peter Parker with the Ultimate version of Miles Morales and now the creative team is back for a second round. Five years have given us the “Secret Wars,” a “Civil War II,” a premonition of the Morales killing Captain America, and the Ultimate Universe gone with traces of it now hanging around in the main timeline. The huge question left off at the end of the first five-issue miniseries was who was the 616 version of Miles Morales? You would think with the Ultimate Universe having merged their Morales into our own it was a question that would never be answered, and it finally is!
Yes, that means we will have two Miles Morales hanging out in the 616 continuity, and the original appears to have a huge surprise in store for us.
The original concept for the series was just something cool that Bendis wanted to do but he did feel that “it just became about legacy and loss and individuality and it ended up becoming one of the best things I ever did at Marvel.” I’m not sure if I would say the best but it was up there, and the cliffhanger has left me wondering for years now what the truth about this other Morales could be.
For those unfamiliar with the story arc, Parker ended up in the Ultimate Universe where their version was already dead. He ended up teaming up with Morales who was still freshly anointed as Spidey, and the two worked together to save the day and get Peter home. After returning to the 616-Universe, we saw that Parker did a search for Morales and was shocked by what he found! Only, we never got to see those search results.
When asked how he felt about revisiting the story arc after having to let it sit for five years Bendis says that:
“Well, it’s one of my favorite things about a shared universe, is that on top of what you’re writing for the characters, other things are happening to the characters, like now Miles is in the new universe, and now he’s a part of CHAMPIONS, and half of [Civil War II] was people fighting over his head, so things have changed in his life, and his relationship to the Marvel Universe is completely different than it was in the first series and that’s exciting.”
Legacy and identity will be the cornerstones of this new miniseries, and I look forward to these two having a chance to team up again. Now that Miles has adapted a bit to the 616 Universe which has never fully been explored it will be interesting to see if they expand upon what he remembers of the Ultimate Universe and potentially what his family might remember.
