With all of the excitement for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ coming out this summer, fans of the webslinger might have forgotten that we are also going to be getting an animated ‘Spider-Man’ film from Sony that will be the cinematic debut of Miles Morales in the titular role, which is a fairly exciting prospect in and of itself. The animated film already has lot of big names attached, with Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey directing, Phil Lord writing the script, and with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Avi Arad, Amy Pascal and Christina Steinberg producing, giving the film a fairly illustrious team behind the scenes to ensure Mile’s first foray into the cinematic world is done right. And now, Sony has announced that ‘Gravity Falls’ creator Alex Hirsch has been tapped as a Story Contributor for the film, which many will see as yet another amazing boon for the project, as ‘Gravity Falls’ was one of the most well-received Disney XD shows of recent years, and still has a pretty large cult following even though they stopped releasing new episodes a while back.
With the addition of Hirsch, as well as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s involvement, it seems more and more clear than the animated film is going to skew toward the comedy side more-so than the other cinematic interpretations of ‘Spider-Man’ we have seen thus far, which is fine given that this is going to be a cartoon anyway, and it also is trying to differentiate itself from the ‘Spider-Man’ played by Tom Holland over in the MCU. Plus, Miles Morales is a relative unknown to movie-goers who are not comic-book readers, so introducing him in an animated movie which focuses more on humor is a great way to endear him to those who may wonder why they are not using the classic Peter Parker version of Spider-Man, and pave the way for a live-action Miles Morales that will by then have a built in audience who knows who he is.
