Things are going to be getting dark this April over at Image Comics as a new series titled ‘Black Cloud’ is set to launch. There is some truly creative talent putting this book together as it will be co-written by Ivan Brandon (‘Drifter’,’Wolverine’) and Jason Latour (‘Souther Bastards’,’Spider-Gwen’) with art by Greg Hinkle (‘The Rattler’,’Airboy’) and colorist Matt Wilson ‘The Wicked + The Divine’,’Paper Girls’) rounding out the team.
There is a lot of talent for both writing and art here. While I haven’t seen them work together in the past I do have to say that I think Hinkle’s style combined with the kind of coloring that Wilson has done in the past really could be a perfect match.
In the book, we follow a young woman named Zelda who was “born in a world of dreams” who ends up on Earth. Once they are shattered, she begins selling fragments of these broken dreams in our world and now not only are the incredibly rich and powerful after her from Earth but survivors from her own lands are hot on her tail to recover what was taken.
According to Brandon:
“I think building this book has taken us all by surprise. This team makes my jaw drop, and it’s been a surreal experience watching all of our different tastes and ideas link up to build something that feels like more than the sum of its parts. This is very different from anything we’ve ever done before. It’s invigorating to be part of it.”
With Hinkle stating that:
“I’m thrilled to get to work with so many folks that I’ve looked up to for so long. It’s a learning experience in the best possible way, and I’m really excited to get to share the results.”
Latour chimes in that:
“Even though it’s conceived as a pretty unfettered comic book kind of idea, BLACK CLOUD just seems to grow to fit and reflect the life that’s happening around us in real time,” said Latour. “With each passing day, we’re reminded more and more of how the stories we consume and tell ourselves really do define our world. Just like real life, this is a story about fact and fiction fighting for supremacy—only here, one of them has a lightning sword.”
This looks like it could be a fun fantasy with the darker tones that Image is often known to bring. The creative team is solid and the plot sounds like something I’m going to want to read so this will be getting added to my pull list for sure while I try it out!
