Online streaming-content giant Netflix has taken a shine to delivering bold, original new content over the last few years, and next month may be bringing their most ambitious serialized show yet with ‘Santa Clarita Diet.’ Starring Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, the show’s “true” plot was just recently revealed, and today we have a new full-length trailer for the episodic comedy’s first season.
During the show’s production – Barrymore’s first time headlining a TV-style show – it was promoted as a zany family comedy “with a twist.” As the trailer shows (and as many folks discovered during the big “reveal” announcement a few weeks ago), the zany family is very much in place, with Barrymore and Olyphant as a California-based realtor married couple with kids. The “twist,” however, is what few people expected, and will definitely be the defining factor on how successful – or not – the show will truly be.
In case you haven’t heard the news yet, feel free to watch the trailer below and check out the show in all its advance glory:
That’s right – Barrymore is, for all intents and purposes, a zombie. With a seemingly heavy focus on keeping the comedy at the front-and-center of the show’s aesthetic, only time (and viewings) will tell if Netflix has captured the right balance of funny and scary. For every amazing example like ‘Shaun of the Dead’ that got this blend right, there are countless others that you’ve never heard of, because they’re really, really bad.
The entire first season of ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ will begin streaming on Netflix in the US on February 3, 2017.
