20th Century Fox has been quiet on ‘New Mutants‘ updates and even writer and director Josh Boone (‘The Fault in Our Stars’) hasn’t shared too many details though one of the actors has now shared which X-Men might reprise his role in the film.
The news comes from Anya Taylor-Joy (‘The Witch’) while at a press interview for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film ‘Split’ in which she stars in. In ‘New Mutants,’ we’ll be seeing her play Magik or Illyana Nikolievna Rasputin who has a full set of mutant skills that are quite fun. If the name Rasputin is familiar that is because it is Colossus’ younger sister and while that might make you think he’ll be appearing, no, he wasn’t the confirmed X-Men.
No, it was James McAvoy reprising his role as Professor X!
First up, here is what Taylor-Joy had to say about potentially working with McAvoy again:
“I mean, I think James is already a part of it, isn’t he?”
It seems like the cat is out of the bag but as Charles Xavier was always the driving force behind putting the New Mutants together this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Also, that isn’t to say that we won’t see Colossus at all, just that it hasn’t been announced as of yet. I think it would be a shortsighted move to introduce Magik and not have her big brother involved with bringing her into Xavier’s school.
She also weighed in on the villain which the New Mutants will be squaring off against:
“I have [seen the Demon Bear animatic], it’s pretty cool. I’m a big fan so I’d love to be a part of it. I can’t say very much, but I would love to be a part of it. I think this year’s gonna be very exciting.”
As a fan of the comics and how Magik has evolved in them, this is a film I am eagerly looking forward to.
