It appears Disney may have revived the ‘Boba Fett’ solo movie that was in development as recently as 2015, with Josh Trank attached to direct. Unfortunately, Trank either quit the project or was removed, after his first big budget tentpole ‘Fantastic Four‘ crashed and burned at the box office, following rumors of his own misconduct on the set. After that, there was no news about ‘Boba Fett’ and it was assumed that the film was no longer on the fast-track at Disney.
But after the massive success of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, the first film in the franchise not directly tied to the main story, and with the ‘Han Solo’ prequel in production with Christopher Miller and Phil Lord directing, it wouldn’t be surprising for Disney to showcase Fett, one of the most popular characters from the original trilogy.
We know that Disney plans to release a ‘Star Wars’ film every year around Christmas and with the success of ‘Rogue One’ it shows that audiences are as ravenous for all-new material in addition to the core trilogies. ‘Episode VIII’ is due to storm theaters next winter with ‘Han Solo’ arriving in 2018. Presumably, ‘Episode IX’ will hit in 2019, which leaves an opening in 2020 for another new ‘Star Wars’.
Lawrence Kasdan is handling the ‘Han Solo’ script with his son Jon Kasdan, but there is talk that Lawrence is also working on the untitled 2020 film. Lawrence Kasdan, of course, also penned ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’, the only two films in which Boba Fett appeared, so IF this project is ‘Boba Fett’ Lawrence Kasdan is quite likely the #1 choice to handle the script.
The website My Entertainment World has listed the ‘Boba Fett’ film as active:
With the Kasdans (possibly) penning both the ‘Han Solo’ and ‘Boba Fett’ it’s possible that ‘Solo’ could feature an appearance by Boba Fett to set up his own solo film.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, though. Disney has not officially announced ‘Boba Fett’, although back in 2015, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did say:
“Don’t worry: Boba Fett is a high priority among our list, please wait.”
So ‘Boba Fett’ may… or may not be set to fly solo in 2020. Would you like to see a Boba Fett solo movie? Or do you think there are better options for that honor?
