We already knew that ‘Alien 5‘ was being delayed with Ridley Scott‘s ‘Prometheus’ line becoming the next ‘Alien’ movies but now Sigourney Weaver (‘Avatar’,’Chappie’) has confirmed that Neill Blomkamp’s dream has been officially moved to the backburner. The film has always been hinted as a true sequel to ‘Aliens’ in a world where ‘Aliens 3’ didn’t happen. The events in the new film would take place prior to that film and would somehow also “give this woman [Ridley] an ending.” From released character designs to early plot details to who would be returning to the cast – fans have been excited!
Apparently, though, the studio wasn’t. During Spain’s San Sebastian Festival where Weaver had received a career achievement Donostia Award she was asked about the status of the project:
“He has got work to do, and I have things going on. I hope we do get to do it. It’s one of those things we wanted to do this past year, but I think Ridley [Scott] didn’t want them all coming out at the same time.”
I’ve previously stated that if the studio had the budget there would be no reason to not film both Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Coveneant‘ as well as ‘Alien 5’ at the same time and release them separately but sadly studio heads have things like budgets to worry about and filming a movie that wouldn’t be released for 3-5 years probably doesn’t in any way, shape, or form help the bottom line.
While the movie is on hold, this has always been a dream project for Blomkamp. Weaver has previously stated:
“There is an incredible script by Neill. I didn’t want to do a fifth one. I thought going to earth wouldn’t be fun. I got this script that was amazing and gives fans everything they’re looking for and innovates in ways that became part of the world for me. He has things to do and I have things to do. And I hope that we’ll circle back around to do it once those things are done.”
So we can hope that this one will still one day see the light of day.
