Ever since ‘Cloak & Dagger‘ was picked up we weren’t sure how it would fit on Freeform (formally known as ABC Family Network) but now that we’re learning some new details about the planned series and it’s starting to make sense. It won’t have quite the spy nature of the standard ABC shows or the darker edge of the Netflix series, though if you had asked me, combining the two would have been a natural fit. Of course, that isn’t the target audience you would expect to find for ABC Family which is why the series is set to be a love story.
As a stretch, this is fitting for the characters but clearly a fit for Freeform. The series will follow two teenagers, Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Brown who are in love. The two come from “different sides of the tracks” and yet can’t get enough of one another. Only, they are kidnapped and used as experiments which give them quite the interesting set of superpowers. Ty becomes Cloak and becomes a living cloak of darkness which has a slew of abilities from hiding to transportation. Tandy becomes Dagger who has power over light and can use it as a weapon.
According to Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb they went in this direction because:
“It’s a love story that happens to have characters that have always traditionally been in that age group. It’s not like we took something and made it into a YA. It speaks to a YA audience and is a YA property. Would I do Punisher on Freeform? I don’t think that’s going to connect the same way.”
That is a fitting answer and while today’s Cloak & Dagger are a little older, the origins of the characters do fill a very concrete YA niche within Marvel. Not only that but they recently were extremely popular in the Ultimate Universe of the comic imprint which was the inspiration for the heroes in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe so it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see them going that route with the characters.
