Despite the super powered pyrotechnics of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ the story was quite grounded, following the similar seventies spy thriller tone of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.  Obviously, with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ coming next year, followed by ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in 2018, things are about to get big again soon.  And it appears that ‘Doctor Strange’ may kick things off, by opening the door to the world of the paranormal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios has released an official synopsis for the upcoming epic, which you can check out below:

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange poster 2Not only does the film add the element of the metaphysical, but a new Earthly locale, Greenwich Village, the setting of the Marvel comic books.  Many of the Marvel movies have been more global in scope (or cosmic for that matter), while the Netflix shows have been based in Hell’s Kitchen.  The bohemian Greenwich Village has always suited the comic hero, who is a bit eccentric and who was created during the psychedelic sixties which influenced Steve Ditko’s art style.

It was previously reported that ‘Doctor Strange’ would also have a slight horror movie feel, playing to the strengths of director Scott Derrickson, who made his name on low-budget thrillers like ‘Sinister’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ just to name two.

‘Sherlock’ star Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the mantle as the newest Marvel Cinematic super hero.  The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Michael Stühlbarg as Nicodemus West, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Mads Mikkelsen as the undisclosed villain.

The film is set to cast a spell on audiences this winter on November 4.
