FOX’s ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ doesn’t air until Halloween week, but coming off the smash ratings and critical success of ‘Grease Live!’, it seems the network is keen to duplicate that with their next big musical special. One teaser has already been released, now Frank-N-Furter takes center stage in this short clip, released in honor of LGBTQ Pride Month.
Transgender spokesperson and Emmy Award-nominated actor Laverne Cox steps into the stiletto heels vacated by Tim Curry in the original film. She also squeezes into a much tighter corset than Curry’s and her overall look is much more like a sleek dominatrix. As fabulous as Curry’s Frank was, his dowdy wig and slightly more ill-fitting lingerie (with pearls, no less) was a little more matronly.
In this clip, Frank-N-Furter saunters up to the camera and plants a big red kiss on the screen, which then changes to the LGBTQ rainbow colors.
“Let there be lips!”
Curry’s sumptuous lips became the defining symbol of the cult classic film, adorning the movie’s poster and covers of subsequent home video releases.
The new presentation is directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega (‘High School Musical’ 1, 2 & 3, ‘Hocus Pocus’). In addition to Cox, the new version features Victoria Justice as Janet, Ryan McCarten as Brad, Adam Lambert as Eddie, Reeve Carney as Riff Raff, Annaleigh Ashford as Columbia, Christina Milian as Magenta, Ben Vereen as Doctor Everett von Scott, Staz Nair as Rocky Horror, and original Frank-N-Furter Tim Curry as the Criminologist Narrator.
This madcap story follows newlywed couple Brad and Janet whose car breaks down, leading them to seek refuge in the manor/laboratory of Doctor Frank-N-Furter, where they find themselves embroiled in the Doctor’s mad schemes which also include his bizarre friends.
