With all eyes on DC and Warner Bros as they put the finishing touches on their female lead driven superhero film ‘Wonder Woman,’ least we forget that Marvel is working on their own in the form of Captain Marvel. With the film not to hit theaters until 2018, there really hasn’t been much news but it looks like we’re closer to finding out who will play the titular role!
Variety is reporting that Brie Larson is in early talks to play Carol Danvers, otherwise known as Captain Marvel. According to the trade, the actress is Marvel’s first choice for the role and both parties are in “early talks.” It’s also being said that Larson is “leaning towards playing the part.”
Larson made a big splash in Hollywood winning numerous awards including an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film ‘Room.’ She will be seen next playing the role of Weaver in the ‘King Kong’ prequel ‘Kong: Skull Island.’
Currently, no director is on board but rumor at one point had Marvel looking for a female director whose letter of her first name was the same letter as the first name of the actress they wanted. However, sources now say Marvel has Niki Caro (Whale Rider) and Jennifer Kent (‘The Babadook’) on top of their short list.
‘Captain Marvel’ is currently in the writing phase of development with Meg Lefauve (‘Inside Out,’ ‘The Good Dinosaur’) and Nicole Perlman (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) penning the script.
With casting this way in advance of the film’s drop date, there is without a doubt we’ll be seeing Captain Marvel in an upcoming Marvel release. Now to figure out which one. Since Captain Marvel was an Avenger, it would make sense that she would appear in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ two-part films, but we may even see her earlier than that.
Marvel at the moment has no comment on this story, but keep checking back as it looks like we may be giving an official casting report soon!
‘Captain Marvel’ is slated to fly into theaters on July 6, 2018.
