Amazon’s surprise reboot of ‘The Tick‘ is starting to shape up as they’ve just tapped Peter Serafinowicz (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’,’Shaun of the Dead’) to play the part of the lead character. Fans of the original series would have been thrilled to see Patrick Warburton don the bright blue outfit once more but with a full on reboot in the works he won’t be the one making a comeback. While Serafinowicz has done a bit of genre work and comedy mixed in with his huge backlog of films and television, there hasn’t been much in the all out weird that The Tick will call for.
I’m really curious to see him tackle the role but I think from his mix of humor and seriousness in the past that he’ll nail the part.
At this time, the studio only has a pilot ordered and not a full on series but as this is a show that is ripe for the kind of original content that Amazon wants to continue competing with Netflix, I highly suspect that this one will get the votes for a series order.
Series creator Ben Edlund is back on the team to create the series and while Warburton won’t be back in costume he will be joining Edlund and Barry Josephson as executive producers with Wally Pfister (‘Transcendence‘) set to direct. On the casting side, Serafinowicz will be joined by Griffin Newman who will play his sidekick Arthur and Valorie Curry who will play Dot, Arthur’s sister and a nurse.
On the new series, The Tick suffers from memory loss and was locked up in a mental ward after being diagnosed as a schizophrenic due to his warnings that evil was coming to their city. It seems like it will be an updated version to the original comics over a new take on the television series and I suspect that with the original guiding hands behind the series that we’ll be in for a treat.
